Celebrating the Stories of First Ladies

Scholarship

The National First Ladies Library & Museum is proud to announce the opening of its 2026 Mary Regula Memorial Scholarship, inviting Stark County 12th grade students to explore the powerful and often overlooked impact of America’s First Ladies.

This annual scholarship opportunity aims to uplift young writers who recognize the importance of telling history through the eyes of women. While presidential history has long been dominated by the perspectives of men, many First Ladies played key roles as diplomats, confidants, advocates, and eyewitnesses to defining moments in American history.

Applications open December 12, 2025 at 12:00 PM (Noon) and close March 31, 2026 at 5:00 PM.

Essay Prompt

In 750–1000 words, students must respond to the following:

Over the past 250 years, the contributions of First Ladies have often been underrecognized, despite their influence on American history. Select one First Lady from an era in American history and explore how she shaped or expanded the role. How did her work reflect the issues of her time, and what lasting impact did she leave? Using historical evidence, cite your sources and highlight at least one lesser-known aspect of her life or influence. As part of your analysis, identify the sources that most informed your understanding of this First Lady. Example eras include: Revolutionary, Antebellum, and the Progressive Era.
