Mary Lincoln's Couturier, Elizabeth Keckley: From Enslavement to the White House

IN PERSON at Kent State University: The National First Ladies Library & Museum is thrilled to partner with the The Kent State University Museum to bring you a special in-person program featuring Elizabeth Keckley, the couturier for First Lady Mary Lincoln.

As she rose from enslavement to the White House, Keckley made a significant name for herself in Washington, DC, circles as she crafted exquisite gowns for those in power, most famously Mary Lincoln. This talk will be given by Carmen Evelyn G. Nuyda, author of Lizzy: The Elizabeth Keckley Story; Sara Hume, PhD, curator/professor at Kent State University Museum, and our own Michelle Gullion, Senior Director of Curatorial Services for the National First Ladies Library & Museum.

You'll also have the opportunity to view an exquisite Mary Lincoln capelet from our collection that Keckley made for the First Lady in 1861.

The program will be held at the Kent State University Museum, 515 Hilltop Drive, Kent, Ohio 44242.
